The Best Elopement Hikes in Iceland

There are tons of awesome hikes in Iceland, but knowing the best ones to suit your desires and needs ensures you make the most of your elopement.

  • Glymur Waterfall Hike. This hike is a moderate loop that circles the Glymur falls, the second highest waterfall in Iceland. There are some steep spots, and areas where you need to use a rope to help you climb up and down, plus at one point you do need to cross a river. For these reasons, hiking boots are definitely recommended. Despite these small obstacles, the Glymur Waterfall Hike is quite popular because the views are amazing.

  • Mount Brennisteinsalda Hike (Landmannalaugar). Mount Brennisteinsalda is a volcanic mountain, and in English the name means “sulphur wave”. The trail attracts hikers from all over and is one of the most popular day hikes in Iceland. The coolest part is that the volcano is still visibly active, which you can glean from the hot sulphur springs and emerging vapour!

  • Brennisteinsalda-Bláhnúkur Loop Hike (Landmannalaugar). If you combine Mount Brennisteinsalda hike with a trail on Bláhnúkur mountain, you get the Brennisteinsalda-Bláhnúkur loop. The hike is difficult and takes anywhere from 4-6 hours. It will bring you to summit two mountains, along winding trails, and through lava fields. It’s utterly spectacular.

  • Arnarstapi-Hellnar Hike. Located in Snæfellsjökull National Park, this hike is perfect for beginner-level couples who want to experience a little adventure on their wedding day. If you’re looking for something quick, easy, and absolutely stunning, take this 30-minute hike between hamlets Arnarstapi and Hellnar on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Including the return, the whole journey takes you only an hour. In that time you’ll see awesome coastline views, basalt columns, arched rocks, and enjoy a view of the Snæfellsjökull glacier the whole route.

  • Svartifoss Waterfall Hike. Iceland is known for its incredible cascading waterfalls, and you can find this one as well as several others along the way. It’s a moderate hike, and depending on the time of year it may be closed. If it’s open, it’s worth visiting for the views at the end. It’s popular, so go early or later in the day for a more secluded experience.

  • Hafnir-Hafnaberg Hike. This hike will lead you south to the old fishing hamlet of Hafnir along the sheer sea lava cliffs. It’s a great beginner hike that leaves room for even more activities on your elopement (even another hike, if you wanted). If you’re looking for a short trail with beautiful scenery, the Hafnir-Hafnaberg trail is a great option.
